What You’ll Learn

My curriculum is based on the 18 years of instruction I’ve received on the instrument from amazing teachers, mentors and professors, as well as my own personal study of different schools of thought and technique and my personal experiences as a professional gigging musician. I’m forever a student of the instrument!

My students work to develop correct fundamentals of technique, strong reading skills, and proficiency in different styles of music, including pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, African and Afro-Cuban and other latin styles. I can also provide coaching to help prepare for drumline, all-state and college auditions.

Whether you want to become a professional musician, nail your high school jazz audition, start a band with some friends, prep for your college audition, or just jam to your favorite 80’s songs in the garage, you’ll learn how you can make music a lifelong source of passion and joy in your life.

Let’s get started!

Your Drumming Heritage

As musicians, we are the result of a lot of different influences: the music we listen to and immerse ourselves in, the musicians we play with, opportunities for musical growth in our community, and those who teach us.

My story starts with Cary Kamperschroer, a great teacher in a small town in Northwest Colorado. He got me started on drum set, and eventually introduced me to the world of West African drumming.

Over the years I learned from incredible West African masters including Djo Bi, Fara Tolno, and former national drummer of Mali, Abdoul Doumbia. The rhythms of West Africa are a treasured part of my own musical heritage and identity.

By attending festivals and summer camps I had the opportunity to learn from incredible performers and educators like Jim White (UNC), Ron Brough (BYU), and Carl Allen (Julliard).

As a teenager I began studying with world-class drummer Jay Lawrence. While studying percussion performance at BYU, I learned from some of the best around, including Ron Brough, Jay Lawrence, Matt Coleman and Darren Bastian.

As your teacher, I pass on to you what I learned from my own teachers, and it will become an important part of your musical heritage and identity.
